WD-40 – Emerger
The WD-40 Emerger is a legendary trout pattern originally developed to imitate small Blue Wing Olive (Baetis) mayflies and midge emergers. Known for its simplicity and effectiveness, this fly has become a staple on tailwaters, spring creeks, and technical trout fisheries where fish regularly feed on tiny emerging insects.
The Bead Head WD-40 – Olive features a slim olive body and subtle profile that closely resembles vulnerable insects trapped during emergence. Trout often key on these easy meals just below the surface or within the surface film, making the WD-40 one of the most productive flies available when fish become selective.
While originally tied in gray, the pattern has evolved into several productive color variations. The olive version remains one of the most popular and effective choices for matching Blue Wing Olive and midge activity.
