Standard Scuds
Scuds are one of the most important year-round food sources found in tailwaters, spring creeks, lakes, and stillwater fisheries. Present in virtually all trout waters, these small freshwater crustaceans can make up a significant portion of a trout’s diet, especially in nutrient-rich tailwater systems.
There are more than 90 species of scuds found throughout North America, varying widely in size and coloration. Because trout feed heavily on these small crustaceans year-round, it’s always wise to carry multiple colors and sizes in your fly box to better match local conditions.
The Standard Scud is a proven trout-catching pattern designed to imitate natural freshwater shrimp with a realistic curved profile and buggy appearance. Effective under indicators, euro rigs, or as part of tandem nymph setups, this fly consistently produces fish in clear technical water and heavily pressured fisheries.
