About the Earth-Touching Mudra

Bhumisparsha means “touching the earth”. As the Buddha sat under the Bodhi tree, the tempter Mara challenged his right to awaken. The Buddha touched the ground and called the earth to witness, and Mara's armies fell away.

The gesture stands for steadiness, resolve and victory over fear and distraction. It is one of the most common poses in Buddhist art across Southeast Asia and Tibet.
